Since opening inSingapore’s CBDlast year, Downtown Gallery has welcomed a raft of fancy new brands to set up shop within its hallowed corridors. As it’s right on the doorstep of UJ HQ, we thought it high time to have a proper root around this swish (and wonderfully smelling!) development to see what all the fuss is about. And we were pleasantly surprised to find some great new restaurants ideal for breakfast andlunch,crackin’ coffee spots, and a plethora offitness studiosoffering everything from barre to boxing. If you work in the CBD and haven’t trotted over for a look around, we highly recommend you do. And if healthy living is on your agenda, you’re in luck; there’re a tonne of places to grab protein bowls, smoothies, and juices ideal for post-workout munchies. Here’re our top picks of places to make a beeline for.

Platinum Fitness

Too busy to train during the day? Platinum Fitness offers the ultimate exercise experience around the clock. That’s right, this top-notch gym is open 24-hours so you can pop in before work, on your lunch break or even well after midnight to get a workout in. With state-of-the-art Matrix equipment, power lifting racks, a cardio area, and a dedicated functional area, you can focus on every aspect of your training programme.

Boulder Movement

You never know what to expect with the Spartan Race, but they have been known to throw climbing obstacles into the mix. Get a one-up on your competition at Boulder Movement where you can join fun classes to learn basic and advanced rock climbing moves. They also have hybrid classes like HIIT for climbing to give you a full-body workout that goes above and beyond your regular training.

Upside Motion

This hybrid fitness studio combines movements from multiple disciplines in fun classes that work out a wide variety of muscle groups. Try the Evolve classes for aerial maneuvers to help you stretch, strengthen and tone. The Sculpt classes feature cardio, light weight training and modified ballet barre exercises for flexibility and definition. And for better alignment, core strength and breathing techniques, the Align classes focus on yoga and pilates moves.

Veda Yoga

So much more than just a yoga studio, Veda Yoga offers comprehensive health programmes that focus on fitness, nutrition, and detoxification. You start by filling out a questionnaire to determine your dosha, then the staff will create an Ayurvedic programme designed to help re-establish your optimal natural health. Think yoga classes, breath work, healthy juices, and meditation to balance the body and mind.

Absolute Cycle

Jump on a bike and let the dimmed lights, pumping music and infectious energy of your instructor and other riders get you into the zone during an Absolute Cycle class at Absolute You. The dynamic spinning-style classes will get your heart pounding and your confidence soaring as you build endurance, stamina and strength, all of which will help prepare you mentally and physically for the rigours of the Spartan Race.

Sweatbox Yoga

Yoga not only helps to hone your muscles but also your mind, and you’re going to need both in tip-top shape if you want to rise to the top of the Spartan Race. Sweatbox Yoga offers a great selection of classes in styles ranging from power vinyasa to easy-going yin yoga and HIIT yoga classes for total body conditioning. However, their specialty is hot yoga, which helps to detoxify the body and increase strength and flexibility.

STILL Boxing

Let your inhibitions melt away as you pummel a punching bag to pulsating music at a STILL Boxing class. These innovative workout seshes take classic boxing moves and fuse them with elements from group spin classes like dim lights and funky beats to get you motivated and into the groove. Besides punching your heart out, you’ll also be doing cardio and strength training exercises to help whip your body into Spartan-worthy shape.

HAUS Atheletics

Do two to three Haus Athletics HIIT workouts a week from now until the Spartan Race and we can pretty much guarantee you’ll see a huge increase in your fitness level. Each group workout runs for 45 minutes and includes fun beats and ultra effective exercises that focus on strength, cardio and core. Trust us when we say all that music, movement and community spirit will leave you feeling invigorated and inspired to take on the world.

The Autobus

If you love eating clean, you’ll love The Autobus. Serving build-your-own protein bowls (starting from a mere $10) for lunch and dinner it’s the ideal post-workout pit stop. This bespoke cycling cafe opens at 7 am meaning you can grab your morning cuppa Joe on your way into the office to boot. Great coffee and great food? We’re sold. Options include quinoa, brown rice, cilantro yoghurt baked chicken, garlic prawns, kale chips and crispy chickpeas.

The Providore

Featuring a cafe, a deli, a bakery, a grocery store, and a cookery school all under one roof, The Providore really is what foodie dreams are made of, and the largest of its stores can be found right here.Start the day with some organic muesli topped with fresh berries and organic yoghurt or the smashed avocado on homemade toast. Or stop by in the morning for a sinful pastry from the bakery, or pop by on a Friday night post-work for its weekly cheese and wine evening (from 6-10pm). We could spend hours browsing the yummy produce stocked here, and even more time spent working our way around the samples in the cheese room.

Lunar Coffee Brewers

OK, we’ll fess up; we’re kinda obsessed with Lunar. Not only because the interior is the stuff of minimalist-chic dreams, but also (and perhaps more importantly) it serves killer coffee and comfort food: hello dreamy butterscotch banana pancakes, we’re looking at you.

Milky Whey

Downtown Gallery, #03-31.

Team fitspo, this one’s for you: Milky Whey is the brainchild of a CruCycle pack leader and serves up smoothies, juices, and smoothie bowls packed with goodness (and protein, if you fancy). The space-themed menu is filled with yummy sounding creations like Dark Matter, a smoothie comprising acai berries, homemade peanut butter, banana, homemade almond milk, and organic cacao whey protein, and Earth Cleanse 2.0, a cucumber based smoothie bowl perfect for when you’re on a cleanse. Yum!

Omotesando Koffee

Famed Japanese coffee house has opened in Singapore, huzzah! Blink and you’ll miss it, so head to the fourth floor and keep your eyes peeled. This tiny stall serves up seriously good Java that hipster coffee aficionados will love.

Freshé

For fresh juices squeezed daily, Freshe is where it’s at. You’ll find a myriad of flavours, from Veggie Detox (carrot, celery, ginger, beetroot, and lemon) to Tropical Sorbet (passion fruit, orange, and mango), and everything in between. Or you can create your own juice potion and the team will whip it up there for you on the spot. Sandwiches and salads are also available.

Saybons

Got a crepe craving? Head to Saybons and hook yourself up with a little taste of France. There are savoury and sweet options available, plus skinny crepes (expect more veg and 50% less cheese). We’re also fans of the soup here; the crepe/soup combo is the perfect antidote to rainy days in Singapore!

6oz Espresso Bar

Apparently, 6oz is the ideal size for a cappuccino, that is according to traditional European artisan coffeehouses. It’s a theory the team behind 6oz Espresso Bar have adopted, and if its brews are anything to go by, we reckon its sound advice. Expect a consistently good caffeine fix.

Wafuken

Singapore’s only sous vide themed restaurant is dedicated to serving up healthy protein bowls that are packed with nutrients and flavour. Each bowl starts with your choice of meat, seafood or an Impossible patty perfectly cooked using the sous vide method for silky textures and tenderness. Then you can opt for sides like cold buckwheat soba noodles, ramen egg or daikon pickles. We highly suggest the signature chicken breast with Furikake brown rice.

Venue by Sebastian

Chef Sebastian Ng is the creative force behind VENUE, an open-concept casual dining venue in OUE Downtown Gallery. The concept is shared plates, so it’s best to come with a group of friends or family and order up a bunch of dishes to share at the table. The style is modern European with Asian influences, so expect intriguing options like the cauliflower misti with spicy mint aioli and the Chilean sea bass with mushroom and bacon ragout and truffle yuzu butter.

OUE Social Kitchen

This unique concept is truly one of a kind in Singapore. Rent a communal kitchen space (ranging from a single hob to a huge kitchen complete with seating for large groups), bring your own ingredients and cook up a storm with your pals. Ideal if you want to host a dinner party but don’t have space at home. It’s also home to a fully loaded bar if you fancy adding booze into the equation, and an epic sound system to pump out your favourite chooooons.

Sports Elements is our go-to sports equipment shop conveniently located in the heart of the CBD that lets us avoid annoying online orders or time-consuming shopping trips to the sporting goods store on weekends. From jump ropes to water equipment, tennis gear and foam rollers – they have everything you’ll need for those days you simply don’t want to be at the gym or in a class. This place will stock you up for those empowering self-workouts, and at-home self-care.
