8 Decadent Chinese New Year Dinners to Celebrate the Year of the Rat

The Lunar New Year falls on January 25th this year, and to usher in the Year of the Rat, tons of restaurants around Singapore will be throwing lavish Chinese New Year feasts. We’re talking divine dim sum, succulent seafood, and traditional Chinese dishes like yusheng, pen cai, suckling pig, pineapple tarts and more. For those who prefer not to cook this CNY, we’ve put together a list of the best Chinese New Year dinners in Singapore that are perfect for a fabulous reunion dinner out with family and friends, a weekend brunch, or an intimate meal to celebrate the new year with someone special.

Cherry Garden

Located in the Mandarin Oriental, this stunning restaurant offers opulent Oriental elegance with dark wood furnishings, teak wall panels, and antique doors. The CNY menus are just as refined with delicacies like the decadent pen cai overflowing with luxurious ingredients like abalone, lobster, scallops, roasted pork belly, and roasted duck. There are a number of set menus to choose from for individuals, families and groups, as well as a la carte options, a dim sum brunch on the weekends, hampers and takeaway goodies.

Crystal Jade Golden Palace

As you would expect from a Michelin-starred spot, the CNY offerings at Crystal Jade Golden Palace are pretty spectacular. Premium ingredients are expertly paired in a variety of indulgent dishes like the crispy roasted pork and marinated foie gras Teochew style, hand-pulled la mien with lobster and dried halibut in superior stock, and herbal roasted duck. The CNY specials are available until early February, but keep in mind that all Crystal Jade outlets will be closed on January 25th.

Yan Ting

Step inside Yan Ting at The St. Regis Singapore and you find yourself in a beautiful dining room done up in soft cream and beige tones and Asian-inspired artworks. Let the servers usher you to a quiet table for two or a long table for groups and dig into exquisite gourmet eats like the yusheng with Norwegian salmon, the braised five-head South African abalone with sea cucumber, and the hand-pulled noodles with Boston lobster. Save room for sweets like the pan-fried rice cake with chrysanthemum and apple jelly.

Summer Palace

One Michelin-starred Summer Palace is ringing in the Year of the Rat with abundant set menus and a la carte offerings that are playful, elegant and luxurious all at the same time. Start by tossing up a yusheng that comes in eight different flavour combos including lobster and truffle, marinated Hokkigai clams with jellyfish, or roselle with lily bulbs. Then try special dishes made just for the occasion like the deep-fried garoupa arranged to look like a rat and served with tangy osmanthus sauce.

Jade

Housed in the historic Fullerton Hotel, Jade is a chic spot to gather with loved ones for a CNY celebration. The Lunar New Year feasts include set menus for couples and larger groups and a la carte options including a great selection of vegetarian delicacies. Depending on which menu you choose, you could be dining on mushrooms with truffle wrapped in beancurd skin, salmon yusheng with champagne jelly, or whole roasted suckling pig with an array of condiments.

Wah Lok

Award-winning Wah Lok is all about contemporary interiors and authentic Cantonese creations with modern twists. For Chinese New Year you can opt for either a seven or eight-course meal featuring premium ingredients flown in from around the world. Dishes include the Alaskan crab ‘lo hei’, braised mee bok noodles with lobster, ginger and onion, and the fried glutinous rice with Chinese sausages. There are vegetarian menus available as well as Malay menus with no pork or lard.

Yan

With flexible seating arrangements and plenty of space to spread out, Yan is the perfect gathering spot for a delicious reunion dinner with family and friends. There are six set menus to choose from, each with divine dishes like salmon lo hei (yusheng), roast chicken with marinated garlic and crispy sliced lotus root, and sauteed prawns with vegetables and deep fried mango and scallop rolls. If you really want to go all out, order up the pen cai brimming with 18 enticing ingredients.

Min Jiang

Min Jiang at Goodwood Park Hotel has been one of our favourite Chinese restaurants for ages because they never fail to serve up seriously great food. Now they have a second location in Dempsey that’s quite a bit bigger than the original, which is perfect for larger groups. No matter which location you hit up, you can enjoy delish CNY dishes like yusheng with salmon, baby abalones, and deep-fried chee cheong fun strips with that look and taste cheesy, which is a nod to the Year of the Rat.
