Lantern

by URBAN JOURNEY
The spectacular views across Marina Bay and over to the skyscrapers of the CBD are just part of the draw at Lantern, a chic rooftop bar perched on the top of The Fullerton Bay Hotel. The name comes from the old Hokkien moniker for Clifford Pier during the 1930s, which translates to ‘Red Lantern Pier’ and refers to the red oil lanterns that would guide sailors and newcomers into the bay. Yet there is nothing old-timey here as Lantern is home to a sleek 25-metre infinity pool and a sprawling wooden deck with a circular copper-panelled bar, plush daybeds and dark wooden tables where diners and drinkers sip on bubbles and snack on oysters and truffle fries while grooving to sultry house beats.

Why you should come here:

During the day this is a pretty sweet spot to soak up some sun next to the pool and cool off with a fresh juice, or if you’re feeling cheeky maybe a mojito or margarita. Come nighttime it’s all about chilling out on the sofas under the chandeliers and fans and watching the lights of the city sparkle on the water as you indulge in signature drinks like Lantern’s house slings and barrel-aged cocktails. They also have gourmet bites on offer like satays, sliders, pizza slabs and spring rolls.

What we love:

The views here are incredible, which makes this a great place to take out-of-towners or someone you’re looking to impress. Their wine list is also pretty impressive with a solid collection of Old World and New World bottles, and you can’t shake a stick at their spirit selection which features faves like Hendrick’s gin, Belvedere vodka and Courvoisier VSOP. If you’re feeling fun we suggest trying one of their signature cocktails like the Merlion with tequila, young ginger, honey, soda and lime, or the Imperial Berry Mojito with rum, berries, mint and champagne.

UJ Tidbit:

This bar is outdoors, so it’s nice to come here in the evening when it’s a little cooler so you can just laze and gaze. Skip the food and go straight to the drinks, as this is more of a sundowner and after-work cocktail spot than a fine dining locale.

Lantern also has fun themed nights throughout the week like the Whisky Connoisseurs’ Night by the Bay on Mondays when they have special prices on select whisky-based drinks, and the Bubbles and Heels Ladies’ Night on Wednesday when the girls get discounts on champagne and can enjoy free-flow vodka.

Damage:

Cocktails start at around $20++.
